Free Mac mini!

I think Apple's new Mac mini will be a huge hit. The combination of its size, looks (both inside and out), functionality and price point (not much more than an iPod!) is bound to make a lot of people give one a try and switch.

What's even better than cheap though? How about FREE? All you need to do is

  • Click on one of the FreeMiniMacs.com urls in the comment-section of this post
  • Complete one online offer
  • Convince 10 of your friends (or weblog readers;-) to do the same
and a couple months later a free 80GB Mac mini will find its way to your home.

This may seem like it's too good to be true, and potentially a scam, but it's not. This offer is from the same people that did freeipods.com, and there are plenty of reports online from people who've received their free iPod through that service. The way it works is that the company behind this gets money for every online offer completed, and getting 10 referrals will make them enough money to send you a Mac mini.

Will this cause a lot of spam? Not sure - Most people seem to report little or no spam as a result of this service. Personally, I created a special email just for this, and will update this post in a week or so to let you know how much spam I received on that email account.

According to their Terms and Conditions, this offer is only for US residents by the way, so if you're considering this but live elsewhere, it seems like you're out of luck.

UPDATE: A few people reported running into some issues with the freeminimacs website. If you're having trouble getting to the offers page after signing up, just go to their Login page and sign on again using the email address and password you entered before. This should take you directly to the offers.

UPDATE 2: One week later, and no spam has arrived yet on the email address I used to sign up for both freeminimacs and blockbuster online (the offer I chose). On the other hand, I have more freeminimacs.com urls posted in the comment-section for this post than my account has referrals with completed offers, so I can't say that I'm completely spam-free...

UPDATE 3: I've got all the referrals with completed offers I need, so I removed my freeminimacs.com referral url from this post. If you're interested in this offer, please use one of the urls from the comment-section of this post.

UPDATE 4: It took almost 2 months, but my free product finally arrived :-).

UPDATE 5: I'm closing the comments-thread for this post as there should be more than enough freeminimacs urls to choose from by now. If you've posted your url and have already got all the referrals you need, please let me know and I'll take the url out of your comment so others have a better shot at getting more referrals.

Which free offer did you sign up for? None thrill me. I also worry, perhaps needlessly, about giving my credit card to these companies and wonder how much of any product I need to purchase (without asking for a refund) to get credit towards the Mini Mac.

I was so stupid as to believe you. I followed the link, typed in my e-mail address and password, and clicked Next Step. I was sent to a page selling thousands of smileys. No Mac mini.

Not very funny.

A free Mac mini? That's almost as silly as a free RSS reader.. Wait a min..

Posted by Factory at January 16, 2005 1:42 AM

Bill: I signed up for the blockbuster online trial - 9.95 for the first month is not a bad deal - just renting 3 movies will get me my moneys worth - I'll see if I like it enough to stick with it thereafter for 14.95/month...

CesarGon: not sure what happened for you, but this is not a joke... they have something on their site about needing cookies enabled; maybe your browser is not setup that way?

James: pyramid scheme? well yes of course... but one that just started...

Factory: Free RSS Reader? mmm guess I may need one for the Mac if this thing works... I'd hate to have to go through the trouble of writing one myself ;-)

Posted by Luke Hutteman at January 16, 2005 2:21 AM

RSS Reader: Luke, unless OS X Tiger solves the problem, I am afraid you have to. Sharpreader is the only Windows app that I still miss after over one year using a mac (again). I could not yet find your GUI concept implemented for the mac.

- No drag and drop
- No autodetection

can you belive that - on a mac :-(

I tried it too, and all I got was the damn page of smiley emoticons.

You go there, you put in your name and password and hit the "continue" button and it just takes you to smileycentral.com. Then I went back to the main page and tried to log in using the name and password I just entered, and it said I was an unknown user.

I am suddenly feeling not so good about having entered my email address there.

Posted by Sean at January 16, 2005 9:46 AM

I signed up, no problem, and even tried one of the offers -- one I wish I'd known about last week, would have saved me a bit of money. Thanks! Hope I can get an miniMac and hope you get one too.

w/r/t the update, that doesn't work. When I first tried to sign up, I hit the submit button, and it takes me to smileys central. Then if I go back and go to the login page and try to log in, it doesn't work because it never created my account.

I tried this on all of those freewhatever sites. They all do the same thing for me.

Posted by Sean at January 17, 2005 2:57 AM

My cookies are OK. Other people have experienced the same "smiley syndrom" so I am not alone. Scam? Pyramid scheme? I don't know, but these guys' credibility is now below zero with me...

CesarGon.

Posted by CesarGon at January 18, 2005 5:13 AM

Scam? Many people received an iPod through freeipods.com, so I doubt this one is a scam.
Piramid scheme? Sure looks like one to me.

I don't think your smiley problem has much to do with this though. Looks more like some kind of weird bug on their side or possibly an issue they have with your browser or browser settings. You may want to try it with a different browser instead and see if that makes a difference...

Great site for free stuff -

Posted by Me at January 29, 2005 11:18 PM

Well, I did complete an offer. I found out you have to actually buy something to have a completion. Since I didn't want to click on the credit card offers, I went for CheapTickets. Here's the cool thing - There I was going to join as a member but for a 3 year membership I and a companion can get free roundtrip flights during the next year (one each). Then today I got a call from that company offering an upgrade to "lifemembership" for only $59 more and I definitely will get a flight with 3 days/2 nights to one of the 25 destinations they offer. They change around the dates and places. I will also get $100 back on my first flight booked through them. I've used them in the past and they are a good company,. So, how do I talk friends into doing this?

Luke, maybe you get credit for my completion - mine shows for me as completed. Here's my link just in case anyone wants to try it out...http://www.FreeMiniMacs.com/?r=14055562

How cool is it that I may not get the mini-mac but I will do well on airfare for the two flights I already figured I'd be making this year!

Posted by cobalt at January 30, 2005 2:15 AM

I really did well with CheapTickets on their offer. I was planning a couple flights this year, and maybe three. I went for a 3 year membership and got two free flights out of the deal. Then I got a call today offering an upgrade to "lifemember" and get a 3 day/2 night package flight and hotel to use within a year. They offer 25 locations for this. When I book a flight the first time that I pay for, I get $100 back directly following that flight. There is a daily offer of 6 free flights and the first to click in on the date and flight wanted, it's yours. So, Since my offer shows as completed, I guess Luke is farther along now, eh? Here's my link I got from my completed offer:

This free mac offer is legit and actually works...

I'm half way towards getting my FREE Mac Mini (and it's the 80GB one too!).

Note that after you sign in there is a "survey" just click no to each, they are actually ads which help pay for your free mac! (This is where some people have been sidetracked to the 'smiley page'.) The offer page is titled "Now Complete An Offer!". Sign up for a free trial offer, if you decide not to continue with an offer you can cancel and still get your "free mac credit". Also best not to use a hotmail account or Safari browser, and be sure to give your actual shipping address.

Visit my info page here before you sign up: http://www.summerhome.com/freemac

Or if you're ready to sign up click here: www.FreeMiniMacs.com

How does it all work? The company (Gratis) gets paid by it's advertisers when you complete your free trial offer. With ten people completing an offer before they ship you a $599 Mac, they've paid for the Mac and made a profit as well (with no advertising cost on their part). They also don't sell your e-mail so spam is not an issue. Of course many people sign up and don't follow through so Gratis makes more profit. They started out giving away iPods and have now given away over $4 million in free merchandise. As the 'FreeMiniMac" is a brand new offer, now's a good time to try it out.

Note that unlike a 'pyramid scheme' you don't have to wait to advance several levels. It's actually known as "referral marketing", you sign up ten people and you have your free Mac!

Check out more helpful information at the link above.

I'm just hopeful, I would like to know exactly how much money these companies are paying for the referrals. If I had all that money, I wouldn't need a free mini mac, I could buy a regular desktop or a powerful notebook. Remember a few yars ago everyone had those banners and would try to get people to click on their banners?

Posted by hopeful at January 30, 2005 11:45 PM

This is a great marketing idea. Especially if they got a lot of folks who never qualify. Someone needs to create a web site that lists who signs up for this stuff and let folks refer and add their names to the list so others can get referred and track their progress so no referrals are wasted. More people could get their free stuff. =)

Please sign up under me...I'm definitely on board trying out a Mac, and I want to test it for accessibility with the upcoming VoiceOver screen reader for blind computer users. So if you sign up under me, you'll be helping me further my journalistic pursuits as I review this new technology that will hopefully make a dent in the Window-centric environment that blind people face:

Wussup people. I'm a producer and I'm tryna get a nice new computer to make beats on. I wanna help rappers and producers do the same. You can get a Free Mac Mini for about 5 min. of work, and im not playin cuz i got my free ipod a few weeks ago! I'm not even playin...www.freeipods.com. but anyway, this is even better. It is real easy if you follow through, and a bunch of dudes @ school got their macs already. Some dudes got iPods, TVs, flatscreeeens...so trust me, this is legit. All you need is time and a credit card.

How does this work!!??!

I suggest using a conga line such as http://conga.section3.net/ - I signed up on this one and have been moving up the list daily. it's really the only good way, outside of bugging your skeptical friends and family.

Hey Everybody,

I now have a blog at my site that explains how this free thing works and what I've been experiencing. Click my name below to view the page.

I've noticed some interesting and inexplicable positioning of my Mac Mini page on Google. It's waaay up there among millions of pages. But I have done no search engine optimization and nobody links to it. If anyone can explain that I'd be much obliged.

And of course here's my obligatory link to my deal:

Click for a free Mac Mini.

I also just signed up at notebooks4free.com, where you can get an iBook or PC notebook. The number of referrals required is steep, however, 18. This is my link for that one:

notebooks4free.com

I’m a writer and indie filmmaker. I have gmail invites up the wazoo to give away and I can help you with your resume or other writing if you can use the help. I'll also reciprocate if you have a deal going that I'd like to join. And then there's cold hard cash via paypal. The going rate seems to be about $15 per offer done.

Tom

PS. If this seems too spammish, please delete it. I don't want to piss anyone off.
